In keeping with the Christmas Season, Grades 3 and 4 are drawing landscapes of the nativity story. Students can select any part of the story to illustrate. The challenge is to place the story in a landscape and show part of the story close and part of the story far away. We are learning ways artists create a sense of space in landscapes, like, creating a foreground, middle and background, adjusting size and color, and considering the placement of our subjects in the drawing. Students have a choice of pastel, oil crayon or colored pencil. They are turning out beautiful!
Grade 4 recently finished a unit on Art As A Historical Record. We viewed examples of works of art depicting specific events in history, such as Washington Crossing the Delaware. Since it was close to Thanksgiving, we selected the Pilgrims coming to America on the Mayflower as our subject for a watercolor collage. We painted our seascape in cool colors, then added our ships. We realized we had to research what ships looked like at that time in history.....no subs or Titanics for this collage!
