8th Grade Book Report - Historical Fiction

1st Trimester Book Report
American Historical Fiction

Each student is required to complete one book report per trimester. Presentation of the book reports for 1st trimester will be on the following Thursdays: 9/30, 10/7, 10/14, 10/21, 11/4, and 11/11. Each student must sign up for your date of choice by 9/9.

The report will have two components; an organizer (this sheet) which will be graded as homework and the completed report which will count as a test score.

CRITERIA (Test Score)

_____ 25 points Annotated Plot Chart
This should include the Exposition (setting, characters, and introduction to the story), Rising Action (at least 5 of the main events of the novel), Climax (the turning point of the novel and reason you believe it to be so), Falling Action (at least 2 events that happen after the climax), and the Resolution (the way in which the novel ends)

_____ 25 points Character Analysis
Choose one main character from the novel. Describe this character in detail (name and age, physical description, what the character is like, etc.). Discuss his/her path throughout the story, any changes that the character experienced and how he/she was affected by this time in history.

_____ 20 points Timeline
Create a timeline showing how the events in the story line up with the actual historical events. The timeline should include at least 10 events (5 from the novel and 5 real life events).

_____ 20 points Critics Corner
Write your personal review of the book in paragraph form. Include reasons why you liked or disliked the book. You should also include whether or not you believe this book to be historically accurate (you will need to do some research).

Your oral presentation should be well rehearsed showing that you know your material! I will be watching and listening to be sure you have appropriate eye-contact and volume.
